Ana Ikan Bakar Petai

The literally awesome menu.
This dining experience actually occured over Deepavali. After watching the kids tire themselves out at my parents house the entire afternoon, we thought we would take them out and watch them go crazy at some other innocent location. There are only two restaurants in Bangi that I know of that has a playground area for kids (please let me know if there are others): McDonalds and Ana Ikan Bakar. After the Gaza episode we are done with McDonalds --for now at least. (Put that french fry down, now). We headed to Ana Ikan Bakar.

Tokio :: we love it!

The GBS girls loving Tokio.

This is how much we love Tokio. Since my last review, we've gone back time and time again and tried out new stuff. And we never tire. Tokio is where we hang out when we have a 3 pm lecture or faculty meeting (as oppose to a 2 pm one, cause that would only mean mamak or CFC). You seriously can't rush a Tokio lunch. It is hanging out, catching up, brainstorming and free advice session at its very best. So anybody in need of any counseling can join us. Usually we're at the corner table. Females only for now please. We can't handle male problems.

Al-Ulfah: Arabic Food, Rocking Malaysian Flavour!

Mazlan's
Awesome mint tea!

Al-Ulfa is this little restaurant by 7/11 Ampang. The tagline: Arabic Food, Malaysian Flavour! Mazlan had been going on about the place ages. He took me there approximately 5 months after he first mentioned it, so now I kindoff have a rough idea of how long it will take for him to do something once he's set his mind on it (i.e., approximately half a year). That means we'll hit Legoland sometime in April 2013. And I should be getting my ring sometime next month. :P

Buffet @ Pullman Putrajaya

Click on pictures to enlarge. The pictures are awesome :)
Mazlan's kambing-saturated dish.
I know you guys love buffets, so against all odds and all the rainy days this December I thought I'd stick this one in. This was a dinner buffet excursion at Pullman Putrajaya on 30th November 2013. And to sound crazy, Pullman is only 5 minutes drive away from MMU if you follow the road to Dengkil (take the Putrajaya exit right before Dengkil exit, and keep left all the way).

For a restaurant parked under a world class resort, the price was not bad at all: only RM60++ per pax. And to spare you the shocking finale, the '++' is RM15. Thank you to my personal banker and fellow diner for the awesome treat. May Allah reward you endlessly for your generosity.

Here's what was available that particular night. It was a TGIF night, by the way, which was why I was smiling so broadly in the picture. Not that work has never been so exciting in my life (it is, as usual), but I am done with undergraduate lecture, and now only have to deal with mature students who give me less--shall we say-- challenges. Hooray~~

Musings: the awesome Masjid BESI

Main prayer hall.

Late congregation.

I love this masjid I really do. To me it is the perfect model of what a masjid should be: vast, airy, bright with sun-rays during the day and flooded with light at night. This masjid also reminds me of death in some ways. The grave is restricted and small, but we always pray to Allah to make our grave as wide and as far as the eyes can see. This masjid reminds me of that, because you can look past the non-existant walls and see the lakes and bridges and skies beyond; as far as the eyes can see.

Tutti Frutti (good for you, not so for your wallet-- I mean purse)

A tutti frutti visit...!

Tutti Frutti is this froyo place which serves healthy yogurt ice-cream. Or frozen yogurt if you like. The target consumer I guess would be 7 to 25 year olds who'd be really excited at getting a chance to pull the ice-cream lever, and top it with delicious (unhealthy) toppings, which in all likelihood cancels out the health benefits of froyo.

For the slightly wiser 25+ and above (that'd be me and the people I hang out with), the anti-colon cancer pitch makes the whole experience and cost, a little bit more worth it.

Nyonya Valley :: Good Food, bad service..

The cute menu cover. Aww...
Just got back from lunch and I have two items on my to-do list. So I am typing this entry and trying to publish in say 15 minutes before I scramble back to work and send Mr H the stuff he requested.

This is lunch just now with Miza at Cyberview Lodge. If you turn left at the entrance of MMU, just keep going down that road, pass the traffic lights at MSC and you'll see a turn on your right. That's Cyberview Lodge. The restaurant we're reviewing today: Nyonya Valley.

I speculate that Nyonya Valley is the sister restaurant to Seri Penang in Cyber Domain and Penang Village in Alamanda, both of which I had done reviews before, and both with Miza. I am not saying their owners are related, but the menu looks and the food tastes almost the same. From the 3 nyonya restaurants stated here though, Nyonya Village now comes out as number 1. Food-wise only though.

School-holiday Destination: Genting

Genting Highlands :: We wuz here.

People who know me well know how much I love to travel. And I haven't travelled in ages. The last trip I went to was Bali last year for a conference and I've been a good girl and stayed within 100 km radius of home ever since.

It was drizzling and we were chillin'.
As a mom, I would just like to note this one trip down, mainly because the pictures that Mazlan took were awesome and, secondly, we could all use some travel tips. I am not sure if Mazlan wants to share the pictures but he'll have to put up with me because I rock his world and I didn't take any.

Sushi King: fit for a queen..!

Mazlan and Kikoman
For the longest time I had wanted to go to Sushi King. Make that since 2007 when I landed in Kuala Lumpur and the humid air hit me. But absolutely no one in my circle of friends likes Japanese food. Except for my bro, and he gets them from Carefour.

As a result, every time I passed by Sushi King I would sigh and trudge to the foodcourt. Of course no one really notices my pain. But then I met Mazlan and he flicks his hair and goes: Sushi anyone? And suddenly the sky turns turquoise.

My pictures have disappeared!! :(

Am sorry to report that I had accidentally deleted all the pictures in my smartphone. Because my phone is extraordinarily smart, it has deleted the pictures on this blog also, because, as I said, it is extraordinarily smart. As a result all of the pictures that I had taken as I went along with this blog is gone :(

I feel almost as if I have wiped the slate of my life clean and starting afresh. Again. (cause I have done it so many times before)

If you have a copy of any of the old pictures, please email them to me: shima.subari@gmail.com. Any picture. I can just re-upload them.

So sad :(

Ikea :: meatballs galore!

This was last weekends trip to Ikea. After an afternoon at the swimming pool at the Cyberjaya Community Center, with the kids choking on water so keruh you can't see two fingers poked into your goggles, Mazlan thought it was time to head back to civilization. That would be dinner at IKEA apparently.

Since I hadn't done a review for quite some time it seems (and you noticed Picasa has wiped out all my pictures from this blog -- oh well), Mazlan out of the goodness of his heart ordered the entire menu at Ikea-- even though all I ever wanted was the meatballs. Instead, I ended up with the Creamy Salmon and Fish & Chips. In retrospect though, thank goodness and alhamdulillah everyone was hungry and none of the food went to waste.

Begin review..

Tokio -- with the GBS girls

Nadia, Che' Nah, Me and Kat

I have 10 minutes before lecture and I am blogging on my phone. This was a farewell get together between the GBS girls of FOE for Dr Azura who will be moving north to a rocking university that is hopefully better than MMU in every aspect save its people. Because GBs only thrives here.

Seafood @ Morib :: time to relax

This entry is sponsored by MM.

This excursion took place last month and I had blogged it in my little phone. If I finally do publish it you are reading it now. Naturally.

Back in March there was a bike jamboree that kicked-off here and I accidentally forgot to pay one of the makcik's who works here for some services. I returned for the sole purpose of finding her, like a Jejak Kasih adventure thing, ya know, except we are not related and I owe her money.

Ben's -- Grey restaurant with food full of colour!

Don't take Ben seriously folks.

This lunch experience occurred few light-years back at Ben's, a restaurant on the 1st floor of KLCC-- tucked away behind the escalator right next to the overpriced Godiva chocolate store. For obvious reasons, Ben has always reminded me of Michael Jackson's pet mouse; the one he sang passionately about. Ben and  Jerry's ice-cream comes to mind too, readily accessible in little tubs at the Blockbuster video store right across the street from campus way back when I was slaving for my degree in some foreign country. Unfortunately, Ben was also the bear actor that killed Brad Pitt in Legends of the Fall. Now Ben has come back in the form of a restaurant to haunt me.

Cyberjaya's very own TOKIO

I should have blogged about this place ages ago, but the AES cameras planted by the roadside on my way back from work means I reach home 10 minutes later than usual; that's 50 minutes a week of valuable blog time down the drain.

Ning introduced me to this place because she thought it awesome. And I brought Nadia few weeks later because I concur! Here are the top 10 reasons why Tokio is the number 2 eatery in Cyberjaya, surpassed only by Saba' out of my loyalty to lamb kabsah not served by Tokio.

And in true Letterman style, begin drumroll...

Bangi Briyani: First class Briyani :: World Class Tauhu Bakar~~

Kambing briyani. A++

I've done a review on Bangi Briyani before, but I don't think I did the place justice then because I didn't order briyani. But on this particular visit, I did. In fact we ordered chicken (me) and kambing (Mazlan) briyani, and to put it mildly-- it was fantalicious (i.e., fantastically delicious). I hereby declare Bangi Briyani one of the best briyani houses in Bandar Baru Bangi. Please keep in mind however, there's only 3 briyani places in Bangi to my knowledge and this is the only one I've been to so far, so we'll keep the praises in moderation. Or, quoting Mazlan's favorite word: wassatiah. For me, the expression would be: Paling sedap! kot. (To his annoyance).

The restaurant is located on the row of shop lots behind Az Zahra and An-Nur hospitals. For 3 pm, there was quite a pleasant crowd.  An old school friend with his family came in and sat themselves at the next table.  Surprisingly he still recognized me and came over to say hi, albeit I have less pimples, brown contacts (as oppose to my nerdy glasses) and a new guy within a 5 m radius. Powerful thing is the brain; a fact which never cease to amaze me. They can never do that with a video/image recognition system. The new guy would set off an intruder alert alarm and the system would shut down.

Chicken briyani. A++
Mazlan went genius that day and ordered the tauhu bakar. I have never been a big fan of tauhu related products but the dish was superblicious (in case you're wondering, it's two-word-combination night). It was crunchy and fresh and could kick Chef Wan off the Asian food channel forever. The peanut sauce was divine and contrary to popular belief, it is not the same as kuah satay. They must have used some very high quality dried shrimp to make it too because I didn't break out spotty the next day. Good stuff.

So there you have it: delicious briyani and mind-blowing crunchy superb tauhu bakar, excellent menu selection, friendly waiters, cozy sofas, fast service and fresh ingredients, complete with old school mates as fellow diners. You know what you need to do next:

buy property in Bangi.

That Cafe @ Balai Seni Islam Kuala Lumpur

Hisham, KakShan, Shima & Mazlan! Selamat Pengantin Baru!

This entry is really about the cafe at the end of our visit to Balai Seni Islam. But to recap the highlights of the day, we first stopped by kak Shan's--my wicked Vandy cum Maxis sister's--nikah ceremony that morning. I ended up handing her mom ang pau in a Maxis Hari Raya envelope like a cheeky school girl, but that's because I accidentally left her present behind and it was the only envelope I could dig up in the car. Awfully sorry kak Shan. Will Poslaju your prezzie as soon as Mazlan signs the card.

Next, we stopped by the Tugu Negara monument because the patriotic side of Mazlan had found out I had never been. In retrospect, I remember feeling a deep sense of appreciation for the warriors who fought for our country, something which you kind off miss out from the tiny picture in the textbook, no matter how long you drool over it. Why on earth didn't my teachers organize a school trip to Tugu Negara? Now I know the source of all this annoyance I've been carrying around my entire life. The weight is finally lifted off my shoulders.
An old hand-written Qur'an..

Chinese calligraphy of Bismillah

And finally, we stopped by Balai Seni Islam, an art gallery in Kuala Lumpur which had more pieces in the souvenir shop than the entire collection on all three floors. But, there were some really nice pieces that stood out in my mind: a beautifully hand-written Qur'an from long ago with only few verses on a each page, a Chinese calligraphy of Bismillah, a pretty kurung-like dress with enormous sleeves that would make me feel like a beautiful princess.

The daggers mesmerized Mazlan the most. He had a piece of steel he wanted to de-daggerized from since I knew him--so we were checking out all the designs from Mughal and Iran because that's where they all seem to come from. We do know the secret of an everlasting dagger-&-owner relationship though, thanks to his wikipedia friends. And since this knowledge may get lost in the modernization era of Malaysia, I am just going to put it down here for the reference of our children and children's children because its really important*: the length of the blade must match the distance between the two nipples of the owner. (Custom-make one would be your best shot). Surprising huh. Well, at keast now you realize why you're not so crazy about the coveted, ancient, priceless dagger your grandpop left you. You need to workout more.

Shwerma and latte. A++

And final stop was the cafe, and oh was it serene. It became fun discussing the menu although there were only two food sets available to order: baklava or chicken schwerma. That's a 50-50% chance I would choose a dish I love, or regretted--the highest to date. There was definitely not enough data to plot out a probability density function and write code to make a decision. So I just ordered what Mazlan did: the schawerma and latte. It was delicious. It took ages to arrive but I was feeling really forgiving that day, mainly because I messed up with KakShan's wedding present. Thus the waiter received a smile f.o.c. and Mazlan didn't punch him.

So stop by the Balai Seni Islam Negara and then the cafe. And then shop till you drop at the souvenir shop next door. They have some pretty wild quality stuff there. Don't forget to drop by Tugu Negara too with your kids. You don't want to deprive them of the Tugu Negara experience like I was. I know they'll be overwhelmed by the size. It's gigantic.

Just Thai :: Just try it~

Chicken with cashews and dried chilis
Once again, I am expanding my territory beyond Bangi and Cyber. This review is on Just Thai in One Utama way over in PJ. Mazlan had a business meeting that afternoon which requires lots of muffins and coffee at shopping malls--much to my amazement and stupefaction, seeing as we never ever relocate our faculty meetings to Starbucks or even that mamak place across the street. Anyway, at the end of it, he sent his driver over to fetch me and join him for dinner. (In the perfect world that is how it would have happened. Of course I had to drive there myself in 6 o'clock traffic.)

So after maghrib prayer we scoured through the mall looking for a suitable restaurant. We passed by Kenny Rogers a few times but ironically on that day, Mazlan for once in his life didn't check my facebook status (it was "mengidam Kenny Rogers...") and being the extremely bashful person that I am, I couldn't figure out how to get him to click on his FB app without it seeming too obvious. He only read it out sometime later, while we chewed on desert *tongue in cheek!*.

Fish cakes.
Tom yam. A++. Go for it!

But anyway, the Just Thai place was just marvelous. Definitely not my first Thai restaurant, but definitely the first Thai restaurant that got me blogging and that's saying a lot.  In the last intentional Thai food excursion (which I would rather forget), Nadia discovered cicak eggs in the tom yam and we swore Never Again. The curse is finally over! Though I would never reveal the restaurant name because they might have become a better place since then........

somewhere in Cyber. Near the street mall.

Belacan Kangkung.
The menu looked too complicated after a long day of work so we ordered the dinner set that was on offer. It came with rice, some 3 dishes, appetizer and desert. The Tom Yam was the most delicious entree, I couldn't get enough of it. It had santan (coconut milk) in it, something which I would never ever dream of putting into tom yam, but somehow it works. The fish cakes, chicken and the belacan kangkung was nice. The pandan jelly was good too, although it was a bit hard because it had too much agar-agar in it. But maybe that's how it was meant to be. You can never be too sure with these Siamese dishes. They probably toned down on a few ingredients to get it going for us Malaysians and that halal certification.

So the verdict? Just Thai comes highly recommended. Just give it a try. Just once!

Sakura Kristal :: Calm, Serene, Relaxing Atmosphere with great food!

This entry is special in itself. It was lunch at Sakura Kristal a few weeks back with Mazlan on his 30++ birthday. By the by, Mazlan is this guy who came into my life and swept me off my feet at a rate of 343 m/s; thats the speed of sound at regular atmospheric pressure in 20 degrees celcius. For us audio engineers, the frequency domain does have it's benefits: for one thing, nobody probably understands what we talk about to each other mostly because it's below 20 Hz. Like now.

The menu

The original plan for Mazlan's birthday was actually the KL tower for lunch, over a pseudo-romantic view of KL in the hot blazing sun as we sip on fizzy apple asam boi not holding hands. But at the last minute we did a detour and instead attended a business talk somewhere in KL that morning, visited his mom in Melawati in the afternoon, followed by my grandmom in Sungai Buluh in the evening and finally coffee with his old school friends in Hartamas later that night. Talk about a Saturday full of new introductions. We couldn't fit in (DS) Najib if we wanted to. Not that we wanted to. No, definitely not.

View from where we sat. Hills in the  background.

I so so loved the place. It was open-air and vast! The tent of a ceiling was some 100 feet above, so lots of fresh air. There was a mild breeze coming from green hills you could see in the distance, and a gigantic propeller for a fan that looked like it had been confiscated from one of those old ancient planes the Wrong brothers crashed. The menu was not bad either: a wide variety of local and western cuisine at pretty reasonable prices. I was so impressed with the place, I presented Mazlan with a small birthday present which I had actually thought of saving for next year. It was that nice~.

Do stop by the restaurant if you are in the Zoo Negara area. If only for the serenity and calming effect if not for the half-starved animals. It definitely worked for me.

Mine. Fetuccini alfredo. Delicious. I wiped the plate clean.
His. Nasi goreng black pepper steak. He wiped the plate clean!
Having fed me really well, (and some private breathing exercises),  he took me to meet his mom. And for the record, it was a good meeting, alhamdulillah. :)

Madam Kwan's ~ Authentic Fusioned Food :P

Ningy one day before flying back to China.
Circa 2012.

So this was a Ningy and Shima lunch session. We haven't had one of those in so long we were almost polite to each other. In the beginning. Before she bombarded me with questions from the scandalous picture of a few adorable kids I posted on FB. On Ningy's end, she is no longer with her old yoga place, and tomorrow she had a flight to catch to Beijing. It was a good time to get together and do a food review before the next accumulation of overwhelmingly exciting news.

Madam Kwan had recently opened up a new branch in Alamanda. In retrospect, I have had a few invites to Madam's a few times in the past so I have always had this assumption that the place must be really good. I don't quite get the tags on the place though:

Cafe. Okay. Cuisine. Okay. Nasi Lemak. Huh?

Kwanies must not have yet met my post-doc supervisor who would have gone crazy beserk at the sudden inconsistency in noun usage. Definite re-write and six months worth of corrections right there.

Bojori fried rice. That there is an egg. FYI.
The thing about Ningy is that she's really good at picking which dishes to order, which is why I am always dragging her along when we visit a new place. The bojori fried rice she ordered was really delicious. My mushroom chicken rice with soup and grated ginger was okay too, although I suspect the dish has more MSG in it than all the other ingredients combined.
The cendol and ABC was up to standard for the higher-than-average price we paid for it. But the deco at the place was really cosy and more than made up for it.
For now, I'd say Madam Kwan is really good and very comfortable. A fusion of Malay-Chinese specialties that gives authenticity a whole new meaning, priced just right for the average professional who's taking her time applying for that promotion because she is still editing an authentic paper one of her authentic students sent her.

Chicken mushroom rice. B!

Go to Kwanies and order the Bojori. Thanks Ningy.

Restoran Baser (a new experience with deer!)

This is one of Izham's bright ideas to get me to try something new so that I'd have something different to blog about. That's the best thing about Izham, he's always full of encouragement. "You should write more" he would say, or, "there's this ________ you need to try", or, "don't worry, I will let you know if you put on weight". Ok, well, it didn't sound so obvious in BM. But I am expecting an extra large Raya hamper from his company to make up for that last sentence.

Udang masak merah.
So sedap with the nasi goreng. A!

Baser is this really cosy place at Bandar Puteri Puchong that serves cute animals for dinner: deer! (hmm, would that be suku-sakat Bambi or the notorious kancil? I wonder). According to their website, they are quite well-known in Johor for their nasi briyani and nasi ayam. Since 1978 apparently.

Nasi goreng ayam. A+!

As a consequence of their established popularity, Izham booked us a table for iftar yesterday. And I had silently hoped we didn't get to share tables with some monotonous couple who barely spoke to each other like we did last time. Wish granted. We got our own table. That's an A+ right there already for Baser.

The bubbly waitress took our order as soon as we arrived. Izham ordered the deer briyani for me and I obligingly obliged. He had wanted me to try deer for a while now, assured me its halal, and that in real life the animal wasn't really that adorable. Then he went ahead and ordered the fried chicken rice for himself. :|

The food was good, but I thought the atmosphere at the place was great~. I am always happy to see families eating together and cute little boys standing on their chairs ready to fall off any minute as they go through their food. They seem like they're unsteady, you know, but not really. Watching them while you eat is like munching salt-free pop-corn at a horror-suspense movie. Very versatile are kids nowadays.

My deer briyani!!!

On food, the nasi briyani was nice for briyani, but if Mr Baser re-named it nasi minyak, I would say awesome. The deer tasted like really tough chicken liver to me but that's because I am inexperienced with deer, so my brain was in transient and got confused at this new protein; unlike someone I know who's had it since he was a kid because his father hunts wildlife with a rifle like the dude from National Geographic. That must have been one awesome childhood.

All in all, it was a cool, interesting and enjoyable deer-tasting experience. And Alhamdulillah a few thousand times, for the great food we had and for the ability and opportunity to enjoy it. Izham casually mentioned landak few times throughout our conversation. That's the technique he used to get me to try deer. I hope there are no landak restaurants in Malaysia. I am sticking to fish and chicken.

This is an Izham recommended
restaurant! Two thumbs up!

Ana Ikan Bakar Petai ~ terlampau menawan selera

Sheemz's stamp of approval. GO!

I am blogging on a Friday night because the ikan bakar was too good to be true.  I know for a fact that Izham sped at approx. 150 km/hour all the way from Puchong to Bangi secure in the thought that nothing in the ikan bakar category can beat his precious Ala Kassim. After the meal, however, he gracefully conceded and agreed Ana was delicious. True, Ala Kassim was great and still is, but Ana Ikan Bakar was absolutely marvelous. 5 star quality. Pure genius. Einsten. M Nasir. You get the idea.

We went there for moreh so we didn't order a lot: just one medium size kerapu ala bakar petai style. The waiter served  the drinks as we anxiously (Izham) and excitedly (me) waited for the big dish to arrive. It came wrapped in banana leaves with two sauces in little bowls on top.

We unwrapped the dish carefully like it contained some precious metal*. This is what it looked like inside: (drum roll...)

Ta daaaa~~ (the camera got blurry out of excitement and failed to focus)

My carrot-apple kosong. And somebody's
teh tarik.
The rest is history. You have got to try it to believe it. I personally am marking my calendar right now to bring my entire army of a family for dinner here in the near future. If my sister hadn't already married, I would have booked the place for her reception. To think that the restaurant is only like 500 m away from where I live and I never even cared to review it. Thank you Ala Kassim.

I have yet to try out the other items on the menu, but for now, am just definitely pleased to order the petai dish again. Izham did casually mention one important fact though. We had sotong, prawns, a good-sized siakap and drinks at Ala Kassim for RM65. We just had fish and drinks here and the bill came out to be RM41. Which means....Ala Kassim wins in the monetary department (if we drove from Melaka that is, *cough*).. But then again, consider the fact that Bangi is this future metropolitan city with restaurants conveniently located right next to the fire station. Plus petai is expensive. So RM41 ain't bad. At all.

Believe it or not, this is the menu.
So, if you are looking for healthy, delicious food at possibly the safest location in Bangi, please go straight past Warta and make a left turn after the police station, and you, my friend, will find it. Before ending this review, I leave you with 8 final words of advice: pack a good toothbrush with extra-strength colgate.
